Manufacturing of impact screwdriver

Screws and nuts are the part of everyday life and help to fasten from the past decades, and the screw heads were either hexagonal or square. Some have a slot in their head, design of the screwdriver largely depends on the design of the screw.

Modern screwdrivers directly derived from flat-bladed and impact driver tools used by carpenters, woodworking is mostly using hand screwdrivers. Early screwdrivers are of flat throughout its length, but currently, it is rounded bar-shaped that is flattened only at the working end and makes the tool much stronger and also takes advantages of the round wire used in the manufacturing of other tools. One of the oldest hand driver tool screwdriver types is slotted screwdriver; it fits a screw with a single slot in the head. The second most crucial variety widely used is the Phillips; soon after its introduction in the society this tool posed a dilemma for its user. Head of the driver could be pulled away from the screw as it gets fastened. Leading to stripped screw heads and assemblies these are difficult to take apart.

The raw material used in screwdrivers

The raw materials for most of the screwdrivers are very general, steel wire for the bar and mostly plastic for the handle. In addition, the steel tips are commonly plated with chromium and nickel.

The manufacturing process

Making the slotted or flat-tip screwdriver is not much difficult or different than making any other configuration. There is a variation between Phillip and flat-tip screwdriver.

Making steel bars

  1. This is the initial step of every type of driver, a coil of green wire is delivered to the factory in large coil, some are maybe heavy as 3000 pounds. The wire is usually of 375 inches in diameter, it is then machine-drawn to the diameter necessary for any production run, one adjustable drawing machine could produce some required diameter.
  2. After the wire is drawn, it is heated for obtaining the correct tensile strength in the metal. It also involves baking the wire at a certain temperature.
  3. The wire is straightened by some string forge and also transferred to any cold forming press and to be cut into respective lengths and also form the tips of the screwdrivers.
  4. Some screwdrivers are nickel plated and also covered with some protective coating of nickel.

Handles

  • Handle are usually made up of cellulose acetate, it is delivered to the factories in dry form, and it is then mixed with liquid plasticizer in a big blander which holds 1000 pounds of the mixed material.
  • The pellets are fed in another extruder material for the handle in bars which are 8 to 10 feet in length. If a dual color handle is desired, a second extruding machine could be attached to any first to extrude a single dual-color rod.
  • Handle is also machine washed and are dried to remove grease oil and excess scrap from the turning extruder and machine. Then it has been immersed in an acetone vapor bath, that melts and smoothen the outside surface.
